KC sends four to MLB All-Star Game
Salvador Perez is headed back to the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
The veteran catcher will represent the Kansas City Royals in the annual ballgame, slated for July 16 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. It’ll be his ninth All-Star Game appearance.
Perez, who was leading the Royals in home runs with 16 through Friday, is among four Kansas City players on the American League roster. Completing the group are shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., and pitchers Seth Lugo and Cole Ragans. Witt, Lugo and Ragans are each making their inaugural All-Star Game appearances.
Witt has been among the major-league leaders in four categories this season, including batting average. Through Friday, Lugo was leading the majors with a 2.21 ERA and was in a three-way tie for second in victories with 11. Ragans was third in the majors with 141 strikeouts.
None of the Royals will start.
Witt also will participate in the Home Run Derby, slated for July 15, also at Globe Life Field. He and the other participants will have three minutes or 40 pitches to hit as many home runs as possible, with the top four advancing to the semifinals and seeded based on their respective first-round performances. The semifinal winners will meet in the finals and have a two-minute time limit or 27-pitch limit.
