There’s more to coaching than knowing X’s and O’s

There’s more to coaching than teaching an athlete about the finer points of a sport. Alas, not enough people outside of coaching realize that, particularly the parents of young athletes. Sports teach athletes life lessons – or at least they should. And great coaches help athletes learn those lessons. That ability to help mold athletes into outstanding men and women is part of what can make coaching a rewarding experience. Unfortunately, there are many aspects of coaching that can make it a stressful one, too. For example, many coaches are highly criticized. At the youth and high school levels, that criticism often comes from parents and friends, who only see what goes on during practices and games. What they don’t see is that many coaches devote hundreds of hours to kids other than their own. Nor do they see that many coaches spend as much time in off-the-field preparation for practices and games as they do at on-the-field coaching, maybe more so....
