Unseasonably warm temperatures greet ES runners at Warrensburg

WARRENSBURG – The Excelsior Springs cross country teams went on an unseasonably warm 3.1-mile run Oct. 14, when they competed in the Warrensburg Invitational. In the varsity boys race, senior Tyler Rumore jumped out in front for the first mile but fell back to second, where he finished in 18 minutes, 22.9 seconds. Junior Gavin Wilmes placed ninth with a season-best time of 19:19.1. Freshman Silas O’Dell ran a personalbest time, finishing 41st in 21:47.8. “I think Tyler could have done better if not for the warmer-than-usual weather,” coach Brian Smarker said. “We are looking for Gavin to be able to improve his time by about a minute for the district meet in a couple of weeks, which could mean we would have three boys headed to the state meet.” In the girls race, senior Jacey Brewer was Excelsior Springs’ top finisher, placing 24th overall in 22:25.1. “Jacey is such a competitor,” Smarker sai...
