April marks the 20th anniversary of National Donate Life Month, which each year highlights the importance of registering your decision to be a donor, honors deceased and living donors and celebrates the lives they saved. More than 100,000 patients are currently waiting for an organ transplant in the United States, with 1,600 of them being from Missouri. A single organ donor can save eight lives and a tissue donor can help more than 75 people. More than 2.5 million lifesaving and healing tissue transplants are performed each year and more than 85,600 corneal transplants help restore sight each year. More than 170 million people in the United States have registered their decision to be a donor, but more donors are needed. A new name is added to the waiting list every nine minutes and 17 people die each day while waiting for a transplant.
