County looks to prevent another tax bill delay

Clay County is clarifying the way senior property tax credits apply to bonded debt as officials work with the county’s software provider to avoid the billing problems that delayed tax statements last year.

During the commission’s June 26 meeting, County Administrator Damon Hodges said the amendment grew out of questions raised during a June 23 work session with the county’s property tax software provider. He noted the clarification is intended to ensure the ordinance reflects the commission’s legislative intent while helping staff stay on schedule as preparations continue for this year’s tax bills.

Administrative Services Officer DeEtta Jacobs explained the amendment adds language specifying the Clay County Senior Property Tax Credit applies to bonded debt obligations. It also clarifies residents enrolled in the Senior Real Estate Tax Relief Program as of March 31, 2025, will receive the lowest bonded debt tax liability from 2024, 2025 or 2026 for the 2026 tax year.
