Air of befuddling wonder hangs over winter prep sports

PREP TO PRO High heat, drop kicks, random observations and points that amuse are all part of the wide, wide world of sports at the community and national levels. As prep winter sports get underway, I am filled with wonder. Not Buddy the Elf-like awestruck wonder that has me thinking, “Wow, winter sports are here!” More like a befuddled wonder that has me thinking, “I wonder what it will be like covering winter sports in a COVID-19 world.” There are specific issues I wonder about, too, as I enter this strange, new sports world. The obvious one is whether COVID-19 will preempt winter sports like it did spring sports. Like other folks in this area who follow, coach or play high school sports, I hope winter sports reach the postseason, as the fall sports did. And like the coaches, I will be grateful for every game, dual, triangular and tournament that comes to fruition – an appropriate attitude perhaps, considering this is Thanksgiving weekend.
