The members of Excelsior Springs’ defensive unit might feel like they’re on an Easter egg hunt at times during Friday’s road meeting with Cameron in varsity 11man football, Excelsior Springs coach Jake Danneman suggested.

The Dragons (0-2) run the flexbone, a run-oriented option offense, Danneman said Monday. A key to running it is hiding the ball; therefore, defenses aren’t “going to know where the ball is from time to time,” he said.

“But you’ve still got to know what your assignment is, based off your key,” Danneman said.

Because of the amount of deception involved with the flexbone, Danneman said he’s emphasizing to his players to not watch what the backfield is doing, and instead, to read their keys to execute their assignments.

“If you don’t have your eyes on your key against Cameron – with all the backfield action and things that they do – you’re going to have Dragons running everywhere,” he said.
