Excelsior Springs had the kind of start in its 42-0 Week 2 home loss to Winnetonka that coach Jake Danneman wants to see.Defensively, the Tigers opened the Sept. 5 varsity 11-man football clash by forcing the Griffins to punt away their first possession. Taking over at its own 47yard line after the shanked kick, Excelsior Springs staged a 10-play drive that stalled at the Winnetonka 9.“We talked all week long about starting fast and just executing fast from the get-go,” Danneman said. “We kind of got a slow start last week and we wanted to make sure we started fast on offense and defense. We came out, we got the stop and then the offense took the ball all the way down to the red zone. Of course, we want to capitalize on those situations. I think that would’ve been huge – we go ahead and capitalize on the situation and be up 7-0.”Excelsior Springs then forced Winnetonka to punt away its next possession.
