Delayed start to season finally ends for netters

The wait is over for Excelsior Springs coach Richie Marsh and his girls tennis program.

After having to wait to play for almost two weeks because of the weather, the Excelsior Springs girls kicked off their varsity season last week with two duals – a 9-0 Sept.10 road loss to Savannah and an 8-1 Sept. 11 home win over Kearney.

“We’ve had six matches canceled or postponed,” Marsh said Sept. 11. “I’ve never had six in a whole season canceled or postponed, let alone six in a row. Crazy.”

At first, it was the heat that forced the netters to change their plans. But then, a Sept. 9 dual with Winnetonka was postponed because of rain.

“Not an ideal way to start,” Marsh said. “But it is what it is. We can’t do anything about it.”

Once the weather cooperated, the Tigers faced what Marsh called a “really solid” Savannah squad.

“We had some good matches – some close matches,” he said.

Marsh was pleased with how his girls rebounded from the Savannah loss with their victory over Kearney.
