Jaxon Hellyer had a few reasons to feel good the night of Oct. 8.For one, the high school senior helped Excelsior Springs down Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference-Blue Division and Missouri Highway 92 rival Kearney 3-1 in varsity boys soccer, providing a second-half assist. He made that contribution at Tiger Stadium on Senior Night, when Hellyer and fellow seniors Maverick Davis, Cruz Lloyd and Brady Schoonover were honored, along with their favorite teachers, between the junior varsity and varsity games.“It’s always great to get a win over Kearney, especially in a home game on Senior Night,” Hellyer said. “So this is a great feeling overall.”The Tigers played through a 0-0 first half to get that “great feeling.” Unofficially, both teams took four firsthalf shots, but Kearney put two shots on goal to Excelsior Springs’ one.“I felt like the first half was evenly matched,” Excelsior ...
