ES softballers sweep, then get swept at opening tourney

CAMERON – Excelsior Springs varsity softball coach Megan Gilbertson broke down her Tigers’ performance in the Cameron Tournament by the two days they played in it. “We came out and played really well Friday, hitting, pitching and playing defense,” Gilbertson said. “We struggled in the circle more on Saturday and made too many mistakes and didn’t drive runs in when we needed to in those three games.” Between the pleasing first day and lessthan- ideal second day, the Tigers went 2-3 in the Aug. 26-27 competition. Excelsior Springs opened with a 3-1 win over Mid-Buchanan. Junior Bailey Carder allowed six hits and one run to get the pitching win. Offensively, the Tigers scored two runs in the third inning and one more in the fourth. They mustered only four hits, with Carder, sophomore Alyssa Dean, and first-year high schoolers Josie Casler and Willa Schreier collecting one hit apiece. Seni...
