ES wins third straight district boys soccer title
Excelsior Springs varsity boys soccer coach Zac Ganzer and his Tigers are Class 2 District 8 champions again.
With their 2-0 victory Wednesday night over visiting, St. Joseph-based Bishop LeBlond, the Tigers (13-5) won their third straight district title. The victory followed a semifinal win over Chillicothe Monday (see The Standard’s Nov. 10 issue for additional district coverage).
Excelsior Springs will play the District 7 champion in the Class 2 state quarterfinals Nov. 11. The District 7 title game is slated for Saturday night at Harrisonville.
The Tigers’ latest district title run followed a run of seven straight victories to cap the regular season. Those wins included a 12-0 Oct. 23 road rout of Kansas City-based Ruskin and a 5-4 Oct. 25 edging of another Kansas City-based school, Oak Park.
Junior Jake Zapata paced Excelsior Springs against Ruskin with four goals. He scored his first goal in the opening minute by finishing a pass from junior Kolin Kincaid.
