ESFB season ends with district loss
KIRKSVILLE – On Oct. 27, the high school football careers of 11 Excelsior Springs seniors ended.
That night at Spainhower Field, Excelsior Springs tumbled 28-13 to Kirksville in a tussle of teams both nicknamed the Tigers. The Class 4 District 8 Tournament loss ended Excelsior Springs’ season at 1-9.
Two seniors, Zeb McBee and Preston Jones, helped Excelsior Springs take a 7-0 first-quarter lead. McBee recovered the high snap of a punt attempt in the Kirksville end zone for a touchdown. Jones booted the extra-point kick.
Sparked by a 45-yard kickoff return, Kirksville answered with a six-play, 31-yard scoring drive, capped by a 6-yard TD run and an extra point. Kirksville then took the lead by staging a seven-play, 59-yard drive, capped early in the second quarter by a 24-yard TD run and an extra point.
A 31-yard, second-quarter interception return to the Kirksville 39-yard line by junior Dawson Claypole put Excelsior Springs in position to tie it again. The offense reached the 14…
