Irons celebrates legacy of Title IX during HOF induction

Terri Irons saw her induction into the Excelsior Springs High School Athletic Hall of Fame on Aug. 10 in the Performing Arts Center as more than a personal honor. She also saw it as reflection of progress in America. “As we celebrate the 50th year of Title IX, I’m really proud that there are three women going in this year,” Irons said early in her induction speech, prompting applause. As multiple sources state, Title IX was passed by Congress with the Education Amendments of 1972 to ensure equal opportunities to participate in educationconnected activities, including athletics, at institutions receiving federal funding. Specifically, as the legislation states, it prohibits exclusion of and discrimination against anyone “on the basis of sex” who wants to participate in activities at those institutions.
