Return to gridiron ends in loss for Tigers

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – After an unexpected week off from playing because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tigers were back in action Sept. 12. That afternoon, Excelsior Springs hosted Moberly, tumbling 42-7. Both teams sputtered on their respective first drives, with the Tigers fumbling on the second play from scrimmage and the Spartans fumbling on their first play. But then, the Spartans scored on their second drive, courtesy of Ethan Vandall’s 11-yard TD run. Moberly converted its extra-point kick to lead 7-0 with 7 minutes, 55 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The Spartans then capitalized on a blocked punt, recovering the kick by sophomore Andrew DeOrnellis at the Excelsior Springs 38-yard line. Although the Tigers refused to yield a touchdown, Moberly still came away with a 27-yard field goal with 1:32 remaining in the first quarter.
