Tigers can’t catch speedy Jays in gridiron loss
RAYTOWN – The Tigers knew they would need to contain Raytown’s speed when the teams met Sept. 2 in varsity football at Ted Chitwood Stadium.
They still couldn’t contain it. Controlling the line of scrimmage, the Blue Jays made big plays with their running and passing attacks, downing Excelsior Springs 42-21. The loss dropped the Tigers to 1-1 entering their Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference-Blue Division meeting Friday with visiting Winnetonka.
The scoring started on Raytown’s first possession, when Freddy Ersery ripped off a 30-yard TD run with 4 minutes, 37 seconds left in the first quarter. An extrapoint kick made it 7-0 Blue Jays. After forcing Excelsior Springs to go three and out, Nate Whitebear connected with Anthony Ransburg for a 61-yard TD pass and Raytown added another point after to make it 14-0 with 2:16 left in the first quarter.
Raytown then staged a six-play, 66-yard scoring drive, capped by Whitebear?...
