Although Excelsior Springs’ student performance is improving in most cases, middle schoolers are still lacking in English Language Arts (ELA), according to state testing data released to the Excelsior Springs School Board this past week.

Many new faces are now a part of various community positions as appointments were made at a recent City Council meeting. John McGovern, former police chief, was appointed to the Excelsior Springs Board of Zoning and Adjustments, replacing Ambrose Buckman.

The Excelsior Springs School District (ESSD) reported a concerning incident which occurred at Excelsior Springs Middle School on Sept. 7 when it was reported a student was carrying a weapon.

The Excelsior Springs Fire Department will now be able to fund emergency preparedness operations thanks to an annual funding allowance from the Excelsior Springs Capital Improvement Board. The board also agreed to replenish the city’s building maintenance fund.

Synergy Services was on hand to discuss its trauma programs for Excelsior Springs students at the monthly Substance Abuse Free Environment (SAFE) coalition. Synergy initiatives for local youth and families help heal trauma, build resilience and strengthen communities through school-based integrated services (SBIS).

The Excelsior Springs West Side Committee recently hosted a get-together to bring property and business owners up to date on the Community Improvement District’s (CID) one-cent sales tax that goes into effect Oct. 1.

Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) Kansas City District Area Engineer Benjamin McCabe confirmed that the bridge work is “on schedule” and the anticipated contract completion is the end of November.
