Ameren Electric Company serves more than 15,000 residents in Excelsior Springs and recently completed installing new electrical smart meters for their customers. John Luth, director of the smart meter program, explained the benefits people can utilize now that the meters are installed.

Senate Bill 190, a bill allowing a personal property tax freeze for those 62 and older, has been a hot topic of discussion for the Clay County Commission. Still confident it will pass, JoAnn Lawson, eastern commissioner at-large, explains it will be done by the end of the year.

ES Community Center to host fall festivities

The second annual community center fall festival will be held on Saturday, from 6 to 8 p.m., coordinated by Youth and Family Coordinator Kyria Hood. Hood, who has been the youth and family coordinator for the past year and a half at the community center, said she is looking forward to seeing members of the community of all ages coming together to have an enjoyable time partaking in a plethora of activities, including trunk-ortreat, yard games and face painting.

Owen Lumber hosts classic car show

After the success of a recent car show, organizers are looking at making it an annual event. Each year, on deck sale weekend, Owen Lumber typically serves lunch to help bring in potential customers.

ESHS celebrates students, staff

Excelsior Springs high school students and staff gathered for an assembly last Friday. Educators were recognized for achievements and students for their attendance. VU Scholarships also reveled $253,430, 646 of funds available to students.

A Belton man pled not guilty to upgraded charges of first-degree murder after a Lawson man he allegedly shot succumbed to his injuries.   

Keith Bass II, 49, was originally charged and plead not guilty to four felony charges, including: one count of first-degree assault or attempt, serious physical injury or special victim; one count of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action. 

Because the second victim succumbed to his injuries, the assault charge was upgraded and therefore Bass was required to plea to all charges again.
