For an Excelsior Springs prep athlete, the track and field season didn’t end with state competition. Kinley Rogers, a Class 4 state qualifier in two events this spring at the high school level, competed in three field events in the 17-18 age group at the AAU Junior Olympics, held July 31-Aug.

Picollo, Royals make trade moves to prep for postseason run

J.J. Picollo has been busy the past few weeks trying to prepare the Kansas City Royals for a postseason run. 

Picollo, the team’s executive vice president and general manager, started making moves July 14 with the acquisition of relief pitcher Hunter Harvey from Washington. Then, on Monday, he helped the Royals secure right handed-pitcher Michael Lorenzen from Texas. 

ESHS grad heads to Mo Valley

Excelsior Springs is sending another student-athlete to college. Joseph James, who graduated this spring from high school, recently signed a letter of intent to study at and run track for Missouri Valley College, a four-year, Marshall-based private college with an enrollment of just more than 1,500 students.

Tiger football hosts tourney honoring Bonuchi

A new football coach at Excelsior Springs High School (ESHS) has made one of his first acts in a position of respect and charity. Jake Danneman recently put together the highly anticipated inaugural Vic Bonuchi Golf Tournament, a well-attended event held at the picturesque Excelsior Springs Golf Course.

Witt piles up the hits after All-Star break

Bobby Witt Jr. continues to power Kansas City and keep the Royals in American League playoff contention with his bat.

The young shortstop was leading the Royals with a .344 average entering Kansas City’s three-game interleague series this weekend with the Chicago Cubs at Kauffman Stadium. Following Thursday’s 8-6 home loss to Arizona, Witt was batting .696 (16-for-23) since the All-Star break.

Building relationships draws Rogers to softball

For Kayden Rogers, her favorite part of high school softball is building relationships. “I have enjoyed the lasting relationships and seeing my teammates succeed at ESHS,” said Rogers, who’ll be a junior this fall at Excelsior Springs.

Ice Crushers smash competition; nab NKCA tourney title

A group of area 13-year-olds dominated their NKCA Baseball League competition this spring and summer. Called the Ice Crushers and coached by Richie Marsh, Andy Cramer, Greg Schmidt and JP Nielsen, the youngsters recently won the league title for their age level, cruising to 9-2 and 15-3 wins in tournament play.
